Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra

The Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra (WSYO) offers young musicians from the tri-state area a formal venue in which to train and perform. 

The WSYO challenges young musicians to rise to their full potential as performers, students and collaborators. Members of the WSYO ensembles develop important skills such as self-discipline and motivation, teamwork, and dedication, all while learning more about the professional music world, making friends, and having FUN! 

The WSYO offers two ensemble experiences: Prelude Strings, for intermediate students, and the Philharmonic, for advanced students. WSYO musicians are offered training opportunities with professional musicians of the WSO and guest conducting sessions with WSO Music Director John Devlin. Members of the Philharmonic have the opportunity to perform side-by-side with WSO musicians during a select WSO performance. 

Competitive auditions draw students from West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Rehearsals are held weekly from September through April, and the WSYO presents two primary concerts each year that are free and open to the public.

The WSYO consists of two ensembles: Prelude Strings and the Philharmonic.

Prelude is geared towards middle school and early high school students who are in an intermediate stage of their musical journey, while the Philharmonic is for high school and college-aged students who are seeking a more challenging ensemble experience.
