THE CONCERT: The 45 minute concert will feature the animated work, Philharmonia Fantastique, by composer Mason Bates. Philharmonia Fantastique: The Making of the Orchestra is a concerto for orchestra and animated film that flies through the instruments guided by a magical Sprite to explore the connection between creativity and technology. Students will see violin strings vibrate, brass valves slice air, and drum heads resonate. A trailer is linked to introduce students to Philharmonia Fantastique.
.
In addition to Philharmonia Fantastique, the orchestra will be demonstrating the instruments and instrument families through a variety of excerpts that best demonstrate the unique sound of each. There are professionally created instructional materials available through the Philharmonia Fantastique online resources at this link:
This site is designed to accompany the live concert experience of Philharmonia Fantastique. It supports the 2014 Music Standards and their focus on Music Literacy. It provides opportunities to make connections to the core concepts of creating, responding and performing, while focusing on the PreK-8th grade General Music curriculum. The materials also provide opportunities to build and deepen connections to Social and Emotional Learning and are deliberately grounded in The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning’s five competencies of SEL: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.
